These days you can find advice and guidance on almost anything at the touch of a button, somewhere on the internet.
The positives of easily accessible information are obvious, but sometimes we downplay or overlook the risks.
Not all sources of information are equal.
The Guardian finds misinformation rife on TikTok
Over 50% of the “top 100” mental health TikToks contain misinformation
[Guardian 2025]
An investigation by The Guardian newspaper revealed a variety of issues with what they called “top mental health accounts” on the social media platform TikTok.
Issues included:
- the promotion of “dubious advice”
- questionable supplements
- quick-fix healing methods
As people increasingly use social media to find help and advice, some of these seemingly simple solutions can be very attractive – especially to the most vulnerable people in society.
An expert perspective – needed now more than ever
As part of their investigation, The Guardian asked a range of experts – including psychologists and academics – to view the top 100 videos posted under the category “mental health tips”. They were asked to judge whether any of these videos contained what could be considered misinformation.
The results were shocking…
The experts found that 52 our of 100 of these videos – many offering advice on issues such as trauma, anxiety, depression, and severe mental illness – contained at least some misinformation.
Others were judged to be vague or unhelpful.
