Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by recurring, anxiety-provoking thoughts or images (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce the anxiety associated with these thoughts. Obsessions often involve intrusive, distressing ideas such as “Did I shut the door?” or “What if I harm someone by accident?” While these types of thoughts are common for most people, individuals with OCD assign deep meaning to them, believing they must take action to prevent harm or negative consequences. This sense of responsibility can lead to compulsive behaviors aimed at neutralizing the anxiety, such as repeatedly checking if a door is locked, excessive handwashing, counting, or arranging objects in a particular order. Over time, these compulsions can become time-consuming and disruptive, significantly affecting daily life and well-being.

Obsessions in OCD typically fall into four main categories.

  • Contamination fears often lead to excessive cleaning or handwashing, driven by a fear of germs or illness.
  • Checking compulsions arise from a fear of being responsible for harm, such as repeatedly ensuring appliances are turned off to prevent fires.
  • Order and symmetry concerns involve a need for perfection, leading individuals to arrange objects in a specific way to reduce discomfort.
  • Intrusive thoughts about losing control can cause distressing fears, such as shouting inappropriately in public, leading to compulsive mental rituals or avoidance behaviors.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for OCD, particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). This approach helps individuals gradually confront their fears without engaging in compulsions, allowing them to see that their feared outcomes are unlikely or unfounded. Through therapy, individuals can break the cycle of obsessions and compulsions, gaining greater control over their thoughts and behaviors.
